All India Quota for medical education 27% OBC, 10% EWS reservation

The central government on Wednesday approved reservations for other backward class (OBC) and economically weak class (EWS) classes students to enter medical school. The center announced on Thursday that it will provide a 27% reserve for undergraduate and postgraduate medical/dental programs in the All India Quota (AIQ) program, and a 10% reserve for the OBC and the weakest part of the economy (EWS).

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare described it as a “historic decision.” It accounts for 15% of the total number of UG seats available in public medical schools and 50% of the total number of PG seats available. Reservations will apply to these seats under AIQ for undergraduate and graduate medical/dental programs at the State College of Medicine and Dentistry.

This will greatly help our thousands of young people each year have better opportunities and create a new paradigm of social justice in our country.” A government statement stated that the decision will enable Nearly 1,500 OBC students of MBBS and 2,500 OBC students of PG will benefit, and it will also affect about 550 EWS students of MBBS and about 1,000 EWS students of PG medicine.

The AIQ program was launched in 1986 under the guidance of the Supreme Court to provide grade-based opportunities for students in any state who wish to study at an excellent medical school in another state. Initially, the AIQ plan had no reservation until 2007. However, in 2007, the Supreme Court introduced 15% of SCs and 7.5% of STs Reserves according to the plan.

After that, the voices became louder and louder, which also benefited students under the OBC regulations. When the “Central Educational Institutions (Enrollment Retention) Act” was implemented in 2007, a 27% unified reserve was established for CBOs, which was implemented in all centrally managed medical schools, but did not extend to AIQ locations in national medical and healthcare institutions The Modi government passed a 2019 constitutional amendment to introduce a 10% reserve clause for the EWS category. Therefore, the seats for medical schools and dental schools have been increased by two years so that the seats for other general categories of students will not be reduced. “However, in AIQ seats, this benefit has not been expanded until now,” the ministry said, adding that, therefore, the issue of retention under the AIQ program is being resolved
