International Friendship Day 2022: International Friendship Day was started by the United Nations General Assembly (UN). On July 30, we around the world look back and be grateful for these relationships, as they foster and encourage peace, happiness, and unity. The United Nations encourages governments, community groups and other organizations to coordinate activities and events that celebrate the friendships we hold close too. Many incidents focus on bridging reconciliation, understanding and consensus, and finding comfort in friendships that feel like home.
History of International Friendship Day
We live in a difficult world. Amidst miscommunication, abuse, lack of trust, discrimination and cultural strife, prioritizing peace appears to have a low presence in a global society. There is really no reason for the world not to exist in some harmonious form. We have the United Nations to thank for helping remind us all that there is something good in this world. We were first introduced to the International Day of Friendship in 2011. This special day goes beyond connecting people and builds bridges between cultures, countries and even ideologies.
Friendships and relationships are synonymous with bonds, and building those common bonds goes beyond sharing a trait, speciality, or favourite pastime with another person or group, but also includes global commitment and fostering an understanding of diversity and inclusion. Physical appearance, differences of opinion, political views, interests, music, and much more are not reasons to separate people. Relationships are bigger than that, and the United Nations works every July to promote kindness and solidarity.
A short note celebrating friendship through things as simple as a coffee hang-out, going to a concert, or taking a trip to the mall are all ways to find similarities. Again, so we all have more in common than we realize. And any thought that diminishes the amount of hatred and disdain spread across the world is something we want to share. We would like to think that we all have something in common.
Before it was made it’s designated by the United Nations, World Friendship Day was first proposed in 1958 by the World Friendship Crusade, an international civil organization that campaigns to promote a peaceful culture through friendship.

International Day of Friendship Traditions
On International Day of Friendship, those friends who are there for us, call us on our insistence, sacrifice their time for us when everyone else is busy being adults, show up at midnight to cheer us up, and Even our long-distant friends whose friendships last across borders are celebrated.
As we know the meaning of friendship is different for everyone in this world. And the bond of friendship also keeps changing. People we’ve known for a long time may not be close to us, whereas we may consider someone we consider our best friend only for a short period of time. This is the reason why traditions and celebrations are different for everyone. There are less important ways to celebrate the day such as just hanging out with friends and doing your ‘thing’, or more elaborate ways such as hosting parties, exchanging gifts and expressing how important they are in our lives. Another common tradition on International Friendship Day is to reach out and reconnect with friends with whom we haven’t been in touch for a while.
